Most digital products are not designed for everyone. Millions of people with disabilities encounter avoidable digital barriers every day. From June 2025, a new law requires guaranteed digital accessibility, with potential fines of thousands of euros for non-compliance.

The WCAG are the W3C's international standard for web accessibility. They explain how to make web content accessible to people with disabilities. They are aimed at content developers, accessibility tool developers and organisations that need to meet a recognised web accessibility standard.

September 23 is the International Day of Sign Languages. Catalan Sign Language (LSC) was approved by Parliament in 2010. In Spain, sign language interpretation is not mandatory on websites, but subtitles are. WCAG criterion 1.2.6 (level AAA) recommends sign language interpretation in video content.

TOTHOMweb participated in a web accessibility workshop for public sector bodies organised by Siteimprove, aimed at meeting Royal Decree 1112/2018 before 23 September 2020. The event covered the state of the art in Spain, available tools and featured the UAB as a success case.

Screen readers read emojis aloud. Since 2019, emojis representing disability exist and are especially useful for deaf people and those with cognitive disabilities. Hashtags should be placed at the end of a tweet and kept to a minimum to ease reading for screen reader users.

People with deafblindness navigate using Braille displays. Traditional captchas are barriers for this group. Honeypot fields and Google reCAPTCHA are more accessible alternatives, but honeypot fields must be hidden with aria-hidden to avoid confusing screen reader users.
